Rose Montagna Indorato

Rose Montagna was born on November 28, 1896, in the Province of Caltanissetta, Village of Sommatino, Sicily, Italy. rose was the second of the Montagna children to emigrate to America. In 1913 at the age of 17, Rose, who was engaged to Liborio Indorato, left for the United States of America. In the early 1900's it was rare that such a young woman would travel so far alone. Rose was a woman of character and probably was frightened at what the future held for her. She never let anyone know of her fear. Rose never returned to her home land.
Rosa Montagna (as her name was listed on the passenger record) left italy from the port of Palermo and arrived at Ellis Island on September 9, 1913. She traveled on the ship Saint' Anna.
This does not look like any cruse ship.
When Rose arrived in the United states , her fiancee, Liborio Indorato was waiting. Liborio was born in 1889, in the same village as Rose. He first came to the United States in 1909 at the age of 21. He returned to Sicily in 1912. He may have gone back to get engaged to Rose. On November 12, 1912 he arrived at Ellis Island for the second time.
Liborio met his future bride at Ellis Island and brought her to Pittston, Pa. where Rose moved in with her sister Angelina.
One month after her arrival in October 1913, Rose and Liborio were married at Saint Rocco's Roman Catholic Church in Pittston, Pa. They moved into a home in an area known as Pittston-Junction. This was an Italian section of Pittston. While living here they had a child.

Liborio worked in the coal mines at Forty Fory, Pa. Liborio did not like working in the mines so in 1916 he took Rose and their infant son moved to Easton, Pa. in search for a better means of employment. They took up residentc on South West Street. This is where their second son was born. Employment oppertunities, for males, was not that promising in Easton. because Liborio was unsuccessful in finding sutable employment the family returned to Pittston, Pa. in 1917.
Upon their return to Pittston they purchased a home and grocery store combination, on Main Street. Liborio went back to work in the coal mines in Forty Fort and Rose tended the grocery store that was located in the front of their home.
Liborio made wine in the basement and sold the wine for additional income. He sold this wine in the back room of the store. Here the local men gathered, drank and played cards.
In October 1923, almost ten years to the day of their marraige, Rose at the age of 27, became a widow. Liborio was killed in a mine cave in at the Forty Fort mine. Liborio's job was working outside the mine when the cave-in occured. He and other miners rushed in to help their friends when another collapse occured. Liborio was fataly injured. Oral history is that on the morning of the accident Liborio was not feeling well and Rose told him to stay home. Liborio went to work anyway. When he dresses it was dark and he put on two different colored socks. When a mine cave in occured sirens and bells are rung and the miners families all go to the mine hoping their loved ones were not injured. Upon arrival at the mine Rose saw them bring a body out of the mine and she immediately knew it was her husband for she saw the two different colored socks. Liborio was buried in the Old Saint John Cemetery.
Rose and Liborio had six childred before Liborio passed away.
When Liborio died Rose was with child. In February, 1924 she gave birth to a daughter and named her Liboria after her father. Rose never remarried.
There was no employment for females in Pittston and Rose did not want her sons to work in the cole mines, so in November 1926 she packed all her belongings, sold the home and store and with her children moved to Easton, Pa. Rose at one point went to Rochester, NY in search of work but found the weather to be to harsh and returned to Easton.
Upon arrival in Easton Rose and the children took up residance in a home on Canal Street in the south side section of Easton. Rose gained employment at the Northampton Pants Factory as a sewing machine operator. This factory was also located in the south side of Easton and Rose would walk to work. Rose was employed at the Northampton Pants Factory for 18 years. In october 1945 she quit her job. Rose had asmsha and could no longer work around the lint and dust that is so dominant in the garment factories.
Some time in the 1920's Rose moved into a home at 126 South 5th Street, Easton, Pa. Everyone said this home was haunted. Some one had commited souside in the garage behind the home. Rose's children all told stories of strange things and stranges noises that they saw and heard in that house. Rose's eldest son Joseph got very sick and Rose blamed it on the house. She then in 1928 purchased the home across the street at 121 South 5th Street.
In this home Rose raised and married off all her children. Rose's health was failing and she could not make the trip to Pittston to visit her husband's grave. In 1954 Rose had her husbands body exhumed and brought to Saint Anthony's Cemetery in Willams Township, Pa.
Rose was one of the organizers of the Santa Barbara Society and a member of the Order of Italy, both organizations were in Easton.
Rose was tought by her mother how to make lace. She made many items for her children, these items have been passed down through the family. Rose's children, grandchildren and great-grandchilren all have lace items that Rose made.
Rose passed away at the age of 62 on April 19, 1959.
